Kwang Yup (Timothy) Chae, originally from Seoul, Republic of Korea, focuses his practice on federal trademark prosecution before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and opposition/cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. He served as a vice president in the Korean-American Intellectual Property Bar Association from 2013 to 2014 and from 2017 to 2018. He has been a designated U.S. attorney for trademark matters for applicants supported by the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) since 2003. He served on a panel of arbitrators for the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board in 2014 and 2015. Since 2002, he has handled thousands of U.S. trademark matters for major companies in Korea as well as start-up companies and sole proprietors. His clients have spanned various industries to include the automotive, aviation, hotel, food service, confections, fashion, electronics, online game developers, K-pop entertainment and cosmetics industries. He has conducted lectures in several Korean universities, associations, and government agencies, such as the Korea Intellectual Property Association (KIPA), the Korea Patent Attorneys Association (KPAA), the Korea Creative Content Agency (KCCA), the Korea Intellectual Property Protection Agency (KIPPA) and many Korean patent law firms.

Education & Admission

Mr. Chae earned his Master of Laws (LL. M.) degree in International Legal Studies from the Washington College of Law, American University in Washington, D.C. He earned both his Master in Law and his Bachelor of Law degrees (J.D. equivalent) from The Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS), Seoul, Korea. Mr. Chae is admitted to the New York State Bar.
